...Arctic Blast to Impact Mid State over the New Years Holiday
Weekend...

An arctic cold front moved through the mid state on Saturday
morning, with much colder air now beginning to spread across the
area through the remainder of the holiday weekend. Low
temperatures will reach down into the teens on Sunday morning and
will only warm into the low to mid 20s during the day. Then, on
New Years Day, lows will range from 6 to 11 degrees with highs
ranging from 18 to 22 degrees across Middle Tennessee.

Adding to the bone chilling cold will be the very low wind chill
values. Wind speeds of 10 to 15 mph will equate to wind chills in
the single digits to lower teens during the day on Sunday. Later
that evening, winds will persist with wind chill values dropping
down below zero with some locations approaching minus 5 degrees by
midnight. By around sunrise on New Years Day, wind chills will
range from zero degrees to minus 8 degrees below zero. A wind
chill advisory is in effect from 10 PM CST Sunday until 9 AM CST
New Years Day for all of Middle Tennessee. Cold temperatures will
continue into Monday night where Middle Tennessee will experience
wind chill values of minus 5 to minus 8 degrees around sunrise.
Another wind chill advisory will likely be issued for the mid
evening hours of Monday night into the mid morning hours on
Tuesday also.

If venturing outdoors during the holiday weekend, be sure to wear
multiple layers of clothing. Consider bringing any pets indoors
and check on neighbors, elderly, and homeless. Also, be sure to
take the necessary precautions regarding the protection of water
pipes from the cold.

Of additional note, if the expected low and high temperatures of
10 and 22 degrees, respectively for Nashville, occurs on New
Years Day, it would mark the 4th coldest New Years Day on record.
The period of record extends all the way back to 1871.
