MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 2054
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1011 PM CST WED DEC 23 2015

AREAS AFFECTED...WRN AND NRN AL...MIDDLE TO ERN TN...FAR NW GA

CONCERNING...TORNADO WATCH 564...566...

VALID 240411Z - 240615Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 564...566...CONTINUES.

SUMMARY...AN ISOLATED WIND DAMAGE AND TORNADO THREAT MAY CONTINUE
FOR A FEW MORE HOURS PARTS OF WRN AND NRN AL EXTENDING NNEWD INTO
MIDDLE TO ERN TN AND FAR NW GA. A NEW WW MAY BE NEEDED TO REPLACE WW
564 AND WW 566 LATE THIS EVENING.

DISCUSSION...CURRENT RADAR TRENDS SHOW SCATTERED STRONG
THUNDERSTORMS ONGOING FROM NW AL NWD INTO MIDDLE TN ALONG THE ERN
EDGE OF A CORRIDOR OF INSTABILITY. MESOSCALE ANALYSIS IS ESTIMATING
MLCAPE AROUND 500 J/KG IN MIDDLE TN TO AS MUCH AS 1200 J/KG IN WRN
AL. THE INSTABILITY WILL HELP TO SUSTAIN THE INTENSITY OF THE STORMS
OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS. IN ADDITION...A LOW TO MID-LEVEL JET IS
ANALYZED ALONG THIS CORRIDOR WITH REGIONAL WSR-88D VWPS SHOWING 0-6
KM SHEAR OF 50 TO 65 KT AND 0-3 KM STORM RELATIVE HELICITIES OF 350
TO 400 M2/S2. FOR THIS REASON...AN ISOLATED TORNADO THREAT MAY
CONTINUE ACROSS THE MCD AREA LATE THIS EVENING INTO THE EARLY
OVERNIGHT PERIOD. ALSO...STRONG SPEED SHEAR IS EVIDENT IN THE LOWEST
1 KM SUGGESTING AN ISOLATED WIND DAMAGE THREAT WILL BE POSSIBLE AS
WELL.
