PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NASHVILLE TN

THROUGH THE FIRST TEN DAYS OF THIS MONTH, NO PRECIPITATION HAS BEEN
RECORDED IN NASHVILLE. SINCE THE REMNANTS OF HURRICANE KATRINA
DROPPED 1.97 INCHES OF RAIN ON THE CITY AUGUST 30, MAKING THIS AUGUST
THE NINTH WETTEST ON RECORD, WE HAVE EXPERIENCED ELEVEN CONSECUTIVE
DRY DAYS.

THE CURRENT FORECAST DOESN'T INCLUDE ANY CHANCE OF RAIN UNTIL
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 15. HISTORICALLY, THE MOST RAIN FREE DAYS TO
START THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER OCCURRED IN 1903, WHEN PRECIPITATION
WASN'T MEASURED UNTIL THE 27TH DAY OF THE MONTH. RECORD KEEPING BEGAN
IN NASHVILLE IN 1870.

DESPITE THE RECENT DRY PERIOD, NASHVILLE'S YEAR TO DATE PRECIPITATION
TOTAL STANDS AT 32.10 INCHES, WHICH IS 1.78 INCHES BELOW NORMAL FOR
THIS TIME.

WE ARE NOW ENTERING WHAT IS USUALLY THE DRIEST PART OF THE YEAR IN
MIDDLE TENNESSEE. SEPTEMBER IS CLIMATOLOGICALLY THE THIRD DRIEST
MONTH, AVERAGING 3.59 INCHES. OCTOBER IS THE DRIEST MONTH, AVERAGING
JUST 2.87 INCHES.
